6/24/19 – 10:30am

Hi, this is City Council President Anthony Eramo with an important water update.

Effective immediately, the Department of Health has lifted its boil water alert, following the complete flushing of the water system. Our water is again safe for consumption.

The City’s water system has been thoroughly flushed over the past several days in a process that included increasing the chlorine levels.

Please note, the County Department of Health recommends that you run all your cold water faucets on full for at least five minutes each. For additional guidance, please visit the Department of Health website or contact them directly at 516-227-9697.

Rest assured, the City and the Department of Health are conducting a full investigation and will be taking decisive steps to locate what the source of last week’s positive result and ensure that the issue is corrected.

This has been a challenging time for all of us, and I would like to sincerely thank YOU, Long Beach residents, for your patience, understanding. I would also like to thank the dozens of dedicated City employees who worked around the clock to help keep us safe.  Long Beach is an extraordinarily tight-knit community, and we should all be extremely proud to be part of it. We’ve all been through a lot, but remember that we are always stronger together. Again, thank you.

6/23/19 – 4:35pm

While we have no additional information from the Department of Health, the boil water alert remains in effect into tomorrow, Monday, June 24.

As a reminder, only boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food, until further notice.

Once again, free bottled water will be distributed in Kennedy Plaza beginning at 12pm.

6/22/19 – 6:00pm

The Nassau County Department of Health, as a precaution, has extended its boil water alert through Sunday and into Monday, June 24. We still have no information suggesting that this is a system-wide issue.

As a reminder, only boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food, until further notice.

Fortunately, there have been no confirmed illnesses from E. coli anywhere in the City.

Long Beach officials will again be distributing bottled water tomorrow – Sunday, June 23 – at 7am in Kennedy Plaza for Long Beach residents only. Please bring identification.

We encourage residents to check on their neighbors to make sure they are informed and to continue logging on to longbeachny.gov for updates.

6/22/19 – 6:39am

Nassau County is providing us with an additional 16 pallets of bottled water that we will be distributing at approximately 7am in Kennedy Plaza (in front of City Hall).

We are told that the Nassau County Department of Health does not anticipate providing any further information concerning our tap water until Sunday – at which point an update will be posted.

Thank you, Senator Kaminsky, for arranging delivery, as the City worked through the night coordinating with New York State and the Nassau County OEM to distribute it to the City.

We would also like to thank you, Long Beach residents, for your patience and understanding during this unfortunate time. Rest assured that our passionate and dedicated city workforce is doing everything it can as we continue coordinating with other levels of government to rectify the situation.

6/21/19 – 6:50pm

The three locations mentioned below no longer have free bottled water available. As a reminder, boiled water (rolling boil for one minute) or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food, until further notice.

We will provide additional updates to this post when they become available throughout the weekend.

6/21/19 – 3:00pm

Beginning at approximately 4pm, 15 pallets of bottled water are being distributed at the following three locations: East School (on Neptune Boulevard), Kennedy Plaza (in front of City Hall), & Long Beach Catholic Regional School (Penn Street Playground). Please park legally and allow the workers to unload safely.

6/21/19 – 1:30pm

We have been notified that during routine water testing at our sampling station near the intersection of Grand Boulevard and West Chester Street, a water sample tested positive for coliforms. This is not E. coli bacteria, but rather one indication of the presence of E. coli. As a result, additional samples were taken at two private residences on Grand Boulevard and West Chester Street. The residence on Grand Boulevard tested positive for E. coli while the West Chester residence tested negative, but did test positive for coliforms. At this time, the City has not received any information suggesting any threat beyond the immediate vicinity of Grand and West Chester. The City is working with the Nassau County Department of Health to ascertain whether any further contamination exists. Updates will be provided as they are received.

6/21/19 – 12:40pm

The Nassau County Department of Health has informed the City that our water supply tested positive for E. coli bacteria and has issued a boil water notice, which means our water is currently not safe to drink unless boiled for at least one minute. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food, until further notice. Residents can check longbeachny.gov for updates.
